About Us

Scouting Dollars for Scholars began in 2016. This was in conjunction with the 93rd anniversary of Boy Scout Troop 93 (Fullerton, California). As part of their celebration, six scouts and scout leaders embarked on a 222-mile journey through the John Muir Trail over a 21-day period that began on July 4, 2016. They traveled from Mt. Whitney (the highest peak in the lower 48 states) and continued to Yosemite Valley; raising dollars for scholars.
On July 2, 2017 this same group of scouts and scout leaders continued to raise awareness with a planned backpacking trip from Sonora Pass to Echo Lake. This trip was cut short due very deep snow conditions and dangerous river crossing due to snow and Ice. But despite these challenges we were able to complete 167 miles in 2017.
2018 added another 184 miles on the PCT with section hikes in southern California and completed most of the sections from the Mexican border to Highway 138.
2019 included 3 trips covering 200 miles. We were able to complete the section we missed in 2017 when the snow caused us to cut our trip short because of the snow. In addition to that we were able to close up a gap from Mt. Whitney to Kennedy Meadows and we were able to hike from Donnor Pass to Bucks Lake.
Thus far in 2020 we have complete 85 miles on weekend hikes closing up the mileage from Tehachapi to Kennedy Meadows. This summer we plan to complete another 385 miles in three trips. Prior to the summer season we have completed 1,176 miles of the PCT. By summer’s end we will be about 100 miles from the California/Oregon border. For an update, visit HIKE UPDATE -2020.
Help us continue to bring greater educational opportunities in the Garnet neighborhood in Fullerton, California, by participating in our Scouting Dollars for Scholars Campaign. Your contribution will go directly to support JOYA Scholars college readiness programs. When JOYA Scholars emerged over seven years ago, this community was marked by one startling statistic: No college graduate had emerged from Garnet in more than a decade. Today there are JOYA Scholars at four-year universities as well as local community colleges. To learn more about JOYA Scholars, please visit joyascholars.org.
